Virginia Governor Patrick Henry signed the land grant that deeded Federal Hill Farm to Col. Thomas Marshall. Federal Hill Farm has been owned by descendants of Col. Thomas Marshall since then.

3/4 acre of Federal Hill Farm was deeded to the Marshall Family Cemetery in 1885.

In Sept 2023, Lisa Fryman and her daughters organized two Federal Hill Farm land transactions to preserve and protect Federal Hill House.

The first was considered because of James Moose’s interest in preserving Washington. Because Federal Hill House is visible from the rear of the Moose family home Mr Moose was a lifelong friend of Lisa’s husband, Tom Fryman. Moose and Fryman even roomed together while attending Harvard. With this in mind, Lisa proposed that Mr. Moose purchase 16.908 acres, subject to a conservation easement designed to ensure no development disrupted Federal Hill House’s view toward Green Street.

When Mr Moose and his wife accepted Lisa’s proposal in Sept 2023, Lisa Fryman and her daughters donated the 5.008-acre Federal Hill House grounds to Elizabeth Wallingford Old Washington Preservation Inc.

Selfless actions by Elizabeth Wallingford, the Moose family, and Frymans have provided an opportunity to restore and protect Federal Hill House for future generations. What is accomplished depends on each of us.
